As I mentioned last month, I plan to post a monthly update on my beloved garden. Here’s what was happening in July:
- Zucchini, zucchini and more zucchini. I think I’ve lost a few pounds on what I call “The Zucchini Diet”, where I eat an entire zucchini cut into spears with hummus every afternoon. (It’s working much better for me than the “muffin diet” I’ve been on for years.)
- Yellow Squash. Too bad they are so much like zucchini, because one or the other has been a side dish for 75% of my dinners.
- String Beans. These were a disappointment. After multiple heat waves, they never seemed to really get going this year. So much for my career as a bean farmer.
- Broccoli. Another disappointment. They started bolting from the heat. We may try planting more in hopes of a cooler-weather October harvest.
- Beets and Carrots. They keep coming, and taste great roasted with a steak. My carrots have been a little strange looking, though — they seem to have legs.
- Cucumbers! I finally got some (5?) deformed cucumbers, after trying to grow them for years.
- Garlic and Onions. Lots of garlic around here, and I gave some to my mom to plant for her garden. Do you know you can’t plant the ones from the store (they won’t grow) because they’ve been irradiated?
- Pumpkins on the way. I didn’t remember planting these, and actually thought they were watermelons at first. They are currently green, but I expect some big orange pumpkins in plenty of time for Halloween.
- Tomato Tsunami. We’ve been eating some delicious cherry tomatoes (I recommend Harvest Gold), while preparing for an onslaught of Romas, Beefsteaks and Brandywines. I can’t wait!
In August, I plan on a diet of Tomato, Mozzarella and Basil salad.
